Love Cut to the Heart

Nick Holden has been seeing Isla Benton, a trainee anesthetist at the hospital, and his wife Laine Quinn knows nothing about it. Laine's heart will not take a pregnancy safely, and she goes ahead with the surgery because Nick wants a child. Isla gives her the wrong anesthetic during the operation, deliberately. Nick watches it happen and lets the resuscitation lapse, since bringing Laine back would put him in the middle of whatever inquiry followed. Zane Hawk, a heart surgeon and the man Laine was with before she married, is back from abroad and gets to her in time to work on her. Nick had been in line for director of the hospital, and the directorship was the reason he wanted none of this traced to him. What was done with the anesthetic comes out anyway, and the directorship goes with it.
