Roman Hawthorne's grandfather settles a marriage for him with the eldest granddaughter of the Stratton family. Roman is the heir of a family that keeps out of public life, and he has never met her. He sends two of his guards ahead to look the household over. The Stratton grandmother lost her husband and then her son, and brought up four granddaughters by herself. The eldest of them, Diana, runs the family company. She is cold with people and cannot bear men near her. Roman hires on in the house as a nanny without giving his real name, and over time he gets at some of what Diana has kept shut away.
