Zoe Walker has been married to Hansen Stone for four years and nobody knows it. In the office she is his most capable subordinate and is treated as such. At home she is his wife. She has assumed all along that the arrangement rests on something that will not move. Her mother-in-law is the one who starts pointing things out, small remarks at first, about Tracy Gable, a young woman around the company who is lively and unbothered by rules. Hansen takes Tracy on trips. He books out a whole ski resort for her. In the office she does as she likes and nothing is said to her. Zoe watches the line move and keeps working. When she stops expecting Hansen to explain any of it, she files for divorce and starts arranging what comes after, without telling him first. Through that period she meets Colin Dale, heir to the Summit Group, and the two of them get on. Hansen only registers what Zoe was worth to him once she has genuinely let go and Colin is standing openly beside her.
