The World Runs on My Word

Frank Stroud spends a night with a woman. Seven years later he has left the army, where he was head of Drakefang, and sells watermelons on a street corner in Jendry. The day before his son's wedding, Frank turns down banquet invitations from his old subordinates and hurries home to help get the wedding feast ready. As soon as he walks in, the bride-to-be and her mother throw him out. His son, who has just been promoted to an executive post at a company, tells him not to come to the wedding the next day. Frank sits by the road eating watermelon. Nearby a little girl, Nessa Lohan, is being kidnapped, and he gets her away from the kidnappers. Nessa starts trying to pair her mother off with Frank. Frank works out that her mother is the woman from seven years earlier, and that Nessa is his daughter. Nessa goes on with the matchmaking.
