Charles Sterling is bound to the Drake family by a marriage contract, and at eighteen his master sends him down from the mountain, where he has trained in divination and other secret arts, to honor it. He reaches Riverton and the first thing he does there is save Vivian Drake, the family's daughter, from a curse that someone has put on her.
