She Who Survives

Ann's husband and her foster sister are working together against her. Ann is the daughter of a prominent family, and the two of them accuse her of trying to poison someone. The accusation holds. She is sent to the Virtue Center, an institution for women, and kept there for three years. She is tortured there, and she comes out with her right eye gone. Back home, her family still does not trust her. The foster sister keeps scheming, and at one point takes Ann's son. When the truth begins to come out, Ann cuts herself off from the family. She then goes through a marriage in name only with a man from another powerful family who has a reputation for cruelty. The marriage is a way to get at the sister and bring her crimes into the open.
