Evelyn had three older brothers among the gods of Asgard, and they had promised her they would look after her for as long as she lived. Asgard treated her as its favourite. Then Ella, the daughter their family had lost, came back, and she told them Evelyn had destroyed sacred relics and had been cruel to her. The brothers believed it. The affection turned to contempt, and Evelyn was put out of the house. The World Tree was failing at the same time, and the abyss below it was opening. Evelyn gave up her soul to seal it and went into a sleep meant to last ten thousand years. Before that she gave her eyes to Oliver, so that he could see.
