Return of the Beggar Empress

Selene wants a doctor for her mother and cannot get one. Six years earlier her father was chancellor. Then a false accusation brought the family down, and the sentence was beggary, for life, with no way back to rank. Before that happened, on one night, she and the emperor had saved each other's lives by chance. She now has a son, and she takes him with her on the search. The people who knew the family in its good years are the ones who get in her way. They bully her in the street. In the middle of that she learns that the man from that night, her son's father, is the emperor himself, and that he has spent the six years since looking for her.
