Vivian's birth parents tell her they are in debt. They are not. They are one of the richest families in the country, and the story is what they use to pull her out of school and put her to work handing over what she earns. She was taken from them as a small child and raised by another family, and she was ten when they came for her. She works until she gets sick, stomach cancer. The money she brings in goes to Mia, the daughter they adopted while she was gone and the one they treat as theirs. The parents call the whole arrangement a test. When Vivian is blamed for something she did not do and put out of the house, her adoptive brother comes back and lays out what her parents have been doing. She returns to her studies, wins prizes at an international level, and makes public how she was treated. She and her adoptive brother stay together.
