Victor Brown reported himself ill when the call to the front came and stayed at home. Valky Carter, who was with him, went in his place and served under his name. She won a run of engagements and the merit for them was entered against Victor. During an inspection of the camp the emperor found out that the soldier fighting under that name was a woman. On the road home Valky's column was attacked by men Victor had sent. She survived it and was the only one of the column who did. Victor claimed the campaign as his own work, and the credit brought him a betrothal to Princess Debra. One of the attackers told Valky that Victor had attached himself to Debra and that the killing and the transfer of the credit had been arranged between the two of them. Valky went after both of them from there. A victory celebration was held for Victor. Valky's mother forced her way into the ceremony in front of the court and told the hall who had fought the campaign.
