Drought in 1993 forced Zhang Jianguo and his wife Wang Xiulan to give away their son Tianyu. They spent the next twenty years looking for him, and spent everything they had doing it. Wang Xiulan fell ill, and rather than take the treatment she gave up on it so the search could go on. At the hospital registration desk a misunderstanding turned into a scene, and a passer-by, an assistant to the businessman Raynold Carter, helped them out and told his employer about it. Raynold is Zhang Tianyu. He had been looking for his parents on the strength of a protective charm his mother gave him. He went to the hospital and found them being humiliated by the wife and son of a local rich man, Wu Gang, who had taken over the medical resources for themselves. Raynold identified himself as the head of the country's largest group and dealt with the pair. His mother came through surgery but did not wake. Later he met Lin Wanqing, the woman who had once helped him, and at her father's birthday party he saw off a rival for her. The two became engaged with the family's blessing.
