Hello, Mr. Chapman!

In a marriage where the husband moves into his wife's family home, he ranks below everyone else under that roof, and the relatives keep count of what he costs them. Lucas comes into the York house on those terms. The Chapmans had been set up and lost the business, and he took the charge on himself so that no one else in the family would, which is how he ended up in prison. He ran a company out of there, Venus Group, under a name that the people dealing with it only know as Mr. Chap. On release he went looking for Helen, who had been engaged to him before the collapse, and he said nothing to her family about the company. Helen's grandfather wants him gone and says it in front of everyone. Most of the relatives are of the same mind. Helen and her parents take his side anyway, and they do it without knowing what he came out of prison owning.
