Ruby and Steven met in high school and were together until the college entrance exams. Ruby raised the breakup. Steven accepted it on the understanding that she had learned what his father had to do with her father's death. He then took his mother's surname, Gibson, and later started a company under it, Gibson Tech. Ruby went into freelance writing. She resigned from one job after being harassed there and stayed single. Over those years Steven kept track of how she was living without contacting her. Once the company was established he arranged the work trip that sent her to Syntherra, and they met there. Ruby took him for a married man and pulled back. That was cleared up, and she kept her distance anyway because of what stood between the two families. Steven kept at it and proposed they live together. His mother later set out what had actually happened between the parents.
