The assassin working under the name Face Paint has a file built on him by the security services, assembled largely by officer Lin Jie. Xu Xingzhi finishes a job on a traitor, takes a serious wound, and runs while the whole city is sealed. Lin Jie sees him and takes him for Xue Wang, her nephew, who disappeared years ago. He lets her believe it and moves into her house, playing a quiet, harmless young man who is not much use for anything. She feeds him and looks after him. He keeps working in secret, silencing a witness who could place him. Her own profile of Face Paint sits in her files and matches the man asleep in her spare room more closely every time she reads it. She probes him with small tests. He watches what she brings home. Neither says what they suspect, and the affection between them grows anyway, which makes it worse. Then something goes wrong in a way he cannot handle by staying in character, and protecting her means showing exactly what he can do.
