Funeral Mahjong: The Queen Wins It All!

The house at stake is paid off to the last cent and it belongs to Zhang Lan. On the eve of her husband's funeral her son Zhou Hao sets a mahjong table up in the mourning room, brings in his mother-in-law Zhou Xiuqin and a few others, and plays for it. Zhang Lan was the name people used to drop when they talked about gambling in that city. She left the tables so Zhou Hao could grow up away from all of it, and what came back to her from him was contempt. She had not sat down to a game in years. She takes the empty seat. The others at the table have arranged the hands among themselves beforehand and pass signals across it. Zhang Lan plays through that and closes with a Thirteen Orphans, and the deed stays in her name.
