Claire Mason's father beat her and gambled, and the man who came to collect his debts was Logan Carter. The two of them were both being ground down by something, and they started leaning on each other. Logan told her the debts would follow her father forever and asked her to leave town with him. She was frightened and said no. That same night the head debt collector came for her with men, and Logan stepped in front of the knife. Claire lived another forty one years by herself and died at his grave, swearing that if she were given another life she would go with him without thinking twice. She wakes up back at the start, before any of it, and finds that Logan does not know her yet. So she throws herself at him in the snow on the street, lights birthday candles for him in his shabby room, and refuses to be shaken off even when he finds her unbearable. She uses what she remembers to keep the knife from ever being raised, and puts herself between him and the people he owes.
