The Surgeon Strikes Back

Eight hundred operations in one year, and at the year-end review the head of department, Wang Zhenguo, pushed William's bonus down to fifty dollars. He stopped taking extra work after that and refused to operate on Chen Jianxiu, a businessman who needed heart bypass surgery. The department fell apart without him. Wang Zhenguo had been suppressing his bonuses for years, and he then claimed to have performed surgeries he had not, presenting himself as the lead surgeon until that came out. The hospital director, Zhang Boyuan, came asking William to return, broke the terms he had agreed to, and had him confined. Chen Jianxiu turned out to be on an inspection team. He went at it through the law, and the case went to the courts, with the people involved facing prosecution. William took over running the hospital and started on a transparent performance system, so that doctors were paid for what they did and patients could be treated without worrying about it.
