Xie Niaoniao has done well for herself at work and better at handling men, keeping several on a line at once without much trouble. A New Year's Eve invitation she accepts at the last minute puts her at a table with Bai Shu, a college student who is nothing like the men she usually picks up. He is young, gentle, entirely sincere, and he tells her flatly that he disagrees with the way she treats relationships. He is also drawn to her anyway, an older woman who unsettles him.
