The Stage Where Love Died

Yu Zheng and Fu Yunzhou have been married five years. On the day of their fifth anniversary, she walks in on him behaving intimately with his junior at the opera school. He has built a stage for the younger woman and put her on it for her debut, and he has lent her the "Butterfly Lovers" costume that Yu Zheng's grandmother left behind when she died. The performance draws applause from the whole house. Yu Zheng goes up to the stage and demands an explanation, and Fu Yunzhou's answer defends the other woman. She decides the marriage cannot be repaired. Yu Zheng withdraws the investments she made in her husband's company, puts all of her shares in it up for sale, and books a flight abroad to study. Five years earlier she had left her Peking opera career unfinished, and she goes back to it.
