The Chace family was the richest in the city and Nick Chace was the son in line for it. He broke with them over Phoebe Snyder and married her, and for the five years after that he made his living delivering food. Phoebe did not take to being poor. A friend of hers kept at her about it, and Phoebe let things go on with Steve Hebert, whom she had been with years before, without either of them putting a name to it. Then Nick's grandmother became seriously ill. Steve's grandmother had a cold at the same time, and Phoebe went to sit with her, and missed seeing Nick's grandmother a last time.
