The Wedding That Wasn't

Edward Henderson has money and Irene Lawson has never seen any sign of it. He kept it out of the courtship deliberately, so that whatever she felt for him would be about him and nothing else, and for a while that was how it looked to him. He was going to tell her all of it on the wedding day. Her friend Nancy got to her first with the idea that a man ought to be tested before you marry him, and Irene took it up. The ceremony turned into a series of demands that made no sense. Edward tried reasoning with her and then pleading, and she went on listening to Nancy. He looked at the woman he was about to marry and did not recognize her, and he said the wedding was off.
