Emil Sears spent years as an elite soldier and dropped out of sight. The Langston family calls him back into civilian work with one job: personal bodyguard to Blaire Langston, who runs the Langston Group and is cold with almost everyone, including him. She resents having a minder at all and puts him down as her driver to keep his real function quiet. Emil turns out to be as useful in a boardroom as in a fight. The threats against Blaire come in mixed forms. There is an incident at an airport. There are traps built into business deals she is walking into. There are technology crimes aimed at the group's systems, and there are people sent to hurt her physically. Emil handles each of them, and in the process starts finding the shape behind them: a rigged fight over the company's stock, competitors with criminal backing, and informants placed inside Langston Group itself who have been feeding out the schedule and the numbers. He identifies them one at a time. Blaire, who wanted nothing to do with him at the start, ends up working the corporate side of it while he works the rest.
