Mortal Trials of a Goddess

Wen Shu is a celestial being sent down into the mortal world to sit her trial of tribulation, the ordeal that determines whether she keeps her divine standing. Her first case is Zhang Shiming, whose sister is dead; she helps bring the sister back and, working the matter backward, identifies Li Shuhao as the one behind it. After that the work keeps coming. She unpicks a body of dark sorcery, calms spirits that have stayed behind out of grievance, and fights the Bone Refined, a thing that cannot be killed by ordinary means. Running underneath all of it is the Trial of the Seven Emotions, which requires her to actually feel the things she has spent her existence above: grief, anger, wanting, fear. Tushan Jin stays near her through the trial. When she is cornered, he gives up his own life to get her out of it. By then she has come all the way into human feeling and she goes back up and takes her immortal seat again. Tushan Jin's body is not where it should be. Nobody can find it. A new decree comes down for her: return to the mortal world and settle the karma that is still outstanding.
