Amelia Scott took a job at a club while her mother waited on an operation the family could not pay for. Jacob Shaw was set up by someone the night he came in, and Amelia spent it with him. She was pregnant afterwards. She kept the child and left without telling him, and Jacob spent the next five years looking for her. Amelia is a lawyer by the time they meet again. Jacob walks in on a meeting she is having about a deal and takes her for another man's mistress. They cross paths again at a hotel bar, where he takes her for a woman selling herself. His family has lined up a marriage interview for him. He tells Amelia he needs a way out of it and puts a contract marriage to her, and they sign. They move in together. Amelia finds out that her mother is the housekeeper in Jacob's house, and that her daughter has already met him. She tells Jacob the girl is her ex-husband's. Jacob believes her and is jealous of the man he thinks fathered the child.
