Holly designs adult toys for a living, and her company runs out of cash. The way out offered to her is a contract marriage with Derek, who deals in weapons. The terms are plain on both sides: he gets something he wants, she gets her company kept alive. They move into the same house and start living as a married couple in name. Derek runs everything around him and expects the same at home, and he is cold with her at the start. Holly looks soft and easy to push, and people around them treat her that way. Schemes come at her from Derek's world and from her own, and there are betrayals and injuries along the way. She learns to hit back rather than absorb it. Derek starts to give ground when he sees she does not fold. What began as two people using each other turns into two people pulling each other out of danger, though misunderstandings keep landing between them and neither says plainly what they feel for a long time. The contract sits there the whole while, a piece of paper with an end date on it, and both of them know the terms they agreed to no longer describe what is actually going on between them.
