Amelia was pregnant with Daniel's child when the Di Maggio family brought her to their estate in Tuscany and put her under their protection there. Daniel had been her husband and had died, and he was the younger of the two brothers. Anthony, the elder, treated her as a threat to the family from the start and said as much to her face. They lived in the same house through a run of arguments. The family had its own disputes going at the time, along with the obligations it laid on the people in it, and the two of them spent a good deal of that period in each other's company. His view of her changed over those weeks, on account of how she held up under it.
