The Engagement Trap

Katie Moore runs a boxed-lunch stand at a construction site. Her son, Xander Lowe, is the chief executive of a company in the city, and she keeps away so as not to get in the way of his life. Word reaches her that he is getting engaged and that his fiancée, Karen Lewis, is pregnant. She packs pickles she made herself, some specialties from the countryside, and a jade pendant that has been in the family for generations, and goes to the city. Karen takes her for Xander's mistress. She bullies her, humiliates her, and gets violent with her. Xander knows none of this. He keeps asking his mother to come to the engagement party, and each time Karen's violence keeps the two of them from meeting. He notices things that do not add up and starts looking into them, and finds that the security footage at the hotel and at the hospital has been destroyed. Karen, for her part, is working to secure her place in the family. She is trying to win over the mother-in-law and get rid of the mistress at the same time. Katie thinks it over and decides to say nothing about who she is, so that her son's marriage and the Lowe family's bloodline are not put at risk. She takes the insults. On the day of the engagement banquet, in front of the guests, Karen smashes the jade pendant Katie brought from home.
