Sophia Bennett is twenty four and has finished medical school, and she has put off her residency while her father Daniel waits for a heart transplant. Her stepmother holds the family property and the say over his treatment, and her stepsister Eva is the heir to Thompson Health. The night Daniel gets worse, Eva tells Sophia that his treatment ends unless she goes up to the hotel suite of the cardiothoracic surgeon Julian Bale. Eva's plan is to drug Julian and catch Sophia in a scandal. It goes wrong, because Sophia saves his life instead, and the two of them spend the night together. The next morning Eva calls her a fraud and announces her own engagement to Julian. Julian is left believing Sophia was in on the trap, and Sophia is left believing he paid her off to keep quiet. When they meet again at the same hospital, they find that the family company has been using an algorithm to deny expensive treatment. Sophia gathers evidence and exposes it. Julian breaks the rules to operate on her father and is taken to court for it.
