Echax Village appears on no map and is run the way a dynasty was run. The women in it are owned and carry a burn mark that says so, and the man in line to inherit the whole arrangement is Jasper Green, who outside the village is a doctor from a poor family. Amber Butler is known in Cloudhaven City as the only daughter of a merchant house. She also founded Glimmer Security, which takes only women as clients and works at the edges of the law on domestic violence, trafficking, and the cases official channels leave alone. Her father arranges a match between her and Jasper. She has doubts about him and he talks her round. She travels back with him for the Spring Festival and finds out what the village is. She goes along with it while she works out the rest, and what is under the place is a gold mine in the hills and women bought and sold through it. A ceremony is set to install the crown prince's wife, with her name on it. She puts what she has found in front of the room. She is taken and held, and gets word out to the police from inside.
