Beyond Status: A Heart's True Journey

Gabriella has been in love with Mateo for years and has never told him. Her mother keeps house for his family. Mateo's mother makes it plain that she thinks little of a maid's daughter, and between that and the gap in position Gabriella comes to feel she is not worth much. She decides that to be worthy of Mateo she has to change. She gives up drawing comics, which she loves, and reshapes herself to his standards, and bit by bit loses track of who she was. Her parents and her friend Calvin stay close to her through it. With them beside her she comes to see that the attachment is only wearing her down, and she lets it go. She goes back to comics and finds a direction for her life in the work. Along the way she notices that Calvin has cared for her quietly the whole time.
