Yoel and Micaela were both orphans and had only each other. The Wang siblings hit her with their car and drove off, and she never came out of it, left in a vegetative state in a hospital bed. Yoel went to the authorities for justice; the Wang family arranged the charges instead, and he served five years. He had a head for mathematics, and in prison he worked it into something he called a formula of fate, a way of reading how small events chain into large ones. Out again, he found he could steer those chains with almost nothing. A pencil, placed where it needed to be, was enough to put Wilfredo's car off the road while he was driving fast, and Wilfredo had been one of the two in the car that day. That was the first of them. Yoel intends to work through the entire Wang family, which he considers a tumor sitting in the middle of River City, and he has already decided what it is worth costing him.
