Web of Deceit

Sandra lost her parents as a child and was taken in by a woman from the village who kept her alive. She treated the woman as an adoptive mother, and once she was grown she married the woman's eldest son to pay the debt back. She was fond of him. The older woman fell badly ill. Sandra wanted her taken to the hospital in the city. Her father-in-law refused and held that the only treatment needed was water made from incense ash. The sick woman drank it and got worse on it. Sandra got her into the hospital in the end, and she was pulled through with little time to spare. The operation had to be paid for, and Sandra had money saved for it. Her husband took the money and handed it to his father, who spent it on rebuilding the ancestral hall in the village, which gave him a claim to stand for chairman of the clan association. Nothing was left for the surgery. Sandra went to the new hall and called the men of that family what they were, careful about appearances and with no morals under it. Later she broke up a wedding they had set up on a lie and got the bride out of it. They wept over all of it in front of the neighbours, and another move against her was already underway.
