At Memory's End, He Lost Her

Ethan Hayes has a first love, and for three years his wife has been standing in for her without knowing it. The wife is Ava Carter. Ethan has been attentive to her the whole marriage and she has taken it as real. On the day her father dies without warning she calls Ethan 99 times in a row, and he cuts off every call. He is on a street in Paris at the time with the first love in his arms. Ava tricks him into signing a divorce agreement and a consent form for an abortion. She has the procedure and afterward keeps up the act of being pregnant. The first love comes back to the country not long after. Ethan loses his composure over her more than once and fusses over her, and when she gets a small burn he leaves Ava sitting alone in a restaurant to go to her. Later the woman goes into acute kidney failure. Ethan donates a kidney to her and hides it from Ava, and on the day of the operation Ava picks up the divorce certificate and leaves for Singapore. Once she is gone, Ethan cannot get her out of his head. Ava starts over at a winery. The work gives her a purpose, and she meets a man who sees her for who she is.
