Belle's mother took her money. Belle had been waiting tables for years to clear her student loans, and the earnings went on drugs and on the men her mother kept around, and the rent went unpaid until Belle was close to losing the apartment. Someone she knew put her onto shifts at a club. William was working there that night, a man who had pulled her out of trouble once before and who ran a company.
