Nicodemus comes out of it believing he is still in love with his ex-girlfriend. She is the one who engineered the memory loss, and the four years he cannot account for belong to Evangeline. He had been the richest man in the city before the company went under. While it was falling, the ex-girlfriend and his aunt worked him over between them, and he ended up on the street with nothing and nobody to go to. Evangeline picked him up. She stayed through the four years it took to build the money back, and he was at the top again when the ex-girlfriend got to him. Now he keeps to the version he woke up with. He treats the ex-girlfriend as the woman who stayed with him, and he does not know Evangeline.
