Sloane's stepbrother Oliver was the one who turned up whenever things went wrong for her at home, and she got into the habit of putting her weight on him. At home there was her mother, who kept in with her second husband and said nothing about any of it, and the stepfather, who would not keep his hands to himself. Oliver got her out of that more than once, and she took cover behind his fairness and leaned on it harder than he could carry. She worked it out that she was the thing dragging him down and that he would be better off with her gone, so she went and left the city behind her. She did not know that he had already gone after her.
