Blake has been in love with Jaxson for a long time and cannot say so. He is forty-five, he owns the ranch, and he became her guardian at her father's death because he had promised his friend he would look after her. She is twenty. As her guardian he treats her as a child, which is the thing she is trying to change. By day she teases him around the place, sweet about it, staying inside what a ward is allowed to do. At night she works as a dancer to pay off her brother's debts, and part of why she does it is that the dancing makes her look grown, which is how she wants him to see her. A gang comes after the debt. Jaxson finds out about the night work while he is dealing with them. He uses what he has to clear the danger away from her, and the guardian line he had been holding does not survive the discovery. After that neither of them keeps to the arrangement they were put in.
