Cherry herself lives in Riverton and practises a healing art that is forbidden, one that can bring a body back from the edge of death, and she uses it mostly on animals. The daughter of an old friend of her father's arrives and starts finding fault with everything Cherry does, and then accuses her outright. Close behind her comes a young woman the family calls its chosen daughter, who has come to take Cherry's place in the household. Cherry's disciples say they will protect her with their lives. In the middle of this her father is struck with a gu poison, and even with that in his body he goes on doting on Cherry.
