Elaine had been with Hugo long enough to think it was settled. Then Vivian, his first love, came back, and the two of them made a public event out of it, in front of people Elaine knew. What came out in the course of it was that Elaine had been a substitute for Vivian the whole time and that Hugo had never pretended otherwise to anyone but her. There had been an arranged match for Elaine before Hugo, a wealthy heir named Trevor whom she had turned down, and she goes back to him. Trevor takes it up where it was left. With him standing beside her Elaine stops concealing what she is, which is the heiress to the Wesley Group, and cuts Hugo out of her life entirely. Hugo puts together who she is and what Trevor's family controls after the fact, and starts trying to get her back.
