Craig Logan delivered parcels for a living until an accident on a run left him bleeding from a head wound. When he came to, his eyes could see through the surface of things, and what they showed him was the true worth of old objects. He bought a statue off a stall for twenty dollars and found it was worth eight hundred thousand. From there he moved into rooms where certified appraisers held court, corrected them in front of their clients, and took millions out of the stone gambling trade, where buyers pay for uncut rock without knowing what is inside. He turned up a painting by a well known artist that had been sitting unrecognized. Dealers he embarrassed began working against him, filing complaints, questioning provenance, trying to get him barred from the competitions he kept winning. He entered anyway and kept winning. The money accumulated into the billions while he was still being described in the trade as a delivery worker who got lucky.
