Lorelei came to the Frostmark court carrying a dragon's scale she had stolen, and with it she took the affection and the standing that had been Princess Diana's. Diana had grown up in that court with her three brothers and had been happy there. The empire had been in winter for as long as anyone could account for, and the only way back to the warmth of the sun was a marriage between a princess of pure royal blood and the Abyss Dragon. The brothers believed Lorelei. They put Diana aside, then offered her at the altar as the sacrifice meant to kill the dragon. The dragon carried Diana off. What the scale actually was came out afterwards, too late for the brothers to take any of it back.
