Endless Desire Highway

She married a man of fifty. His son from an earlier marriage was eighteen and living with them. The three of them drove out of town together. The husband took the wheel. She sat in the back with the boy, a blanket across both their laps. The road was rough. Every time the car went over a bump, the boy's hand moved another inch up under her skirt. She bit down on the blanket and kept her face in it so she would not make a sound. Her husband drove on as though there were nothing behind him worth looking at. The drive went on and the boy did not stop, and what happened in that back seat was not something any of the three could step back from afterward.
