The great houses of the Federation, the Wooleys and the Scotts among them, backed Jarvis Cameron for as long as he was winning. He came home from the border with his power gone, and they turned on him. Bashe, a king-level beast, had fought him to a standstill that wrecked them both. Jarvis lived through it and lost everything he could do. Instead of the honours he expected there was a case against him: he was named as the man responsible for the civilian dead and wounded, a charge the two families built and the other houses signed on to. He is convicted, put in prison, and given a date for a public execution.
