Emily in Her Glow-up Era after Ex's Out

The fifth anniversary of Emily and David's relationship is the day Emily learns what she has been for those five years: the stand-in for Evelyn, the woman David was in love with before her. She ends it that day. She had been on a research track before David and had kept working through the relationship without telling him how far she had got. She goes back to it full time. Daniel, the youngest professor on the faculty, backs her, and she places first in the entrance ranking for the doctoral programme under the supervisor she had wanted all along. The work puts her in rooms where Evelyn's account of herself stops holding up, and the version Evelyn has been presenting comes apart. David sees what Emily had been capable of the whole time, and how much of herself she had put into the five years.
