Alex Lowe gets sent to sit in on a matchmaking meeting arranged for his grandfather, and the woman across the table is Shen Wanqing, whom he already adores. Alex went missing as a small child and was taken in by Johnson Lowe, the chairman of the group, who married Shen Wanqing while passing himself off as a security guard and now spends most of his time keeping that story upright. Alex works on the two of them, pushing them closer together, and plants himself in front of Shen Wanqing whenever anyone tries to bully her. The three of them settle into an old residential block and it is a good stretch of months, though she comes close to working out who they both really are. Then Johnson's ex-wife turns up holding the secret of where Alex came from. She uses it to force Shen Wanqing into divorcing Johnson and humiliates her afterwards. Shen Wanqing has been hunting for her own lost grandson for years and does not know he is the little boy in her kitchen. Her daughter-in-law, going after the same child and working from the wrong information, has Alex kidnapped.
