The Gale and Flint families arranged a marriage between Serena Gale and Ethan Flint. They married first and the feelings came afterwards. Helen Gray then appeared, with the same face as the woman Ethan had loved before the marriage. Ethan took Helen's side against Serena, put her ahead of Serena in one matter after another, and treated her as a stand-in for the first love.
