Lin Xuqiu wants to stay out of the way, and the arranged marriage her family sets up is supposed to fall on her sister. When the sister runs from it, Lin Xuqiu goes to the meeting in her place, expecting the groom to refuse her outright. Zhou Wangjin is known around town as difficult, unmanageable, someone people warn others to stay away from, and she is the opposite of that. He agrees to marry her anyway. After the wedding she is afraid of him, then gets used to him, then starts to overlook him without meaning to. He does not react the way she expects. Instead he grows jealous, dissatisfied, wanting more of her time and attention than she is giving him. Somewhere in this he gives her something like a family, which was not part of the arrangement either of them signed up for. A year in, she draws up a divorce agreement and puts it in front of him.
