Julian Reid enters a sham marriage with another woman to secure a cure for his mute wife, Clara Runder. He ultimately betrays Clara, leaving her to perish in a fire. Clara, however, is rescued, miraculously regains her voice, and rebuilds her life. When Julian discovers her anew, his obsession only inflicts further pain.
