Claire Gould grew up in the Gould house alongside seven boys whose schooling her family paid for, and the eight of them were close for years. Three years ago Chloe Parker, the daughter of the family's driver, came to live among them. Over those three years Chloe set up misunderstandings and ran Claire down to the seven, and they grew cold toward her. Claire then walked in on the seven kneeling in front of Chloe and confessing their love to her, all at once. She decided to cut ties with all seven. A month later, at her own birthday party, she announced to the guests that she would marry Julian Hale, the young master of the Hale family of Kenton, a man who is paralyzed and whom people are afraid of. The seven found out afterward what Chloe had been doing for three years, and regretted it.
