Xavier Zahn's childhood friend Gabby Lane went into labour early and bled out while he was away pulling the Commander-in-Chief clear of an attack. Xavier decided the fault was his wife's, since Winnie Craig was the one who had told him the attack was coming, and he took her life as payment for it. Winnie opened her eyes on the morning of the attack. This time she kept what she knew to herself and went after the Commander-in-Chief's attackers on her own. She found out along the way that the Commander-in-Chief was the man she had spent years looking for, the officer who had served with her father, and that Gabby had been passing herself off with Winnie's own background and taking what came with it. The attack had not been chance either, since someone close to the Commander-in-Chief had given away where he would be, and he and Winnie began working together to find that person.
